REGISTRATION IS LIMITED TO 25 ATTENDEES

WORKSHOP TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:

  • Laying the Foundation. Assess your audience, purpose, and context to learn which information to include or exclude, identify the right tone, and formulate a relevant logic.
  • Exploring, Part I. To combat writer’s block and eliminate procrastination, practice several strategies for understanding what you already know.
  • Grammar, Part I. Review parts of speech and common problems they pose in scientific and technical writing.
  • Exploring, Part II. Learn how to research in the Fish and Wildlife Service and how to turn research into working notes and a living document.
  • Arranging. Go beyond Roman numeral outlines to create meaningful logical strategies for a variety of content situations.
  • Selecting a Writing Style. Some information is best conveyed in narrative form; other times a summary is more appropriate. Select a writing style and explore its conventions, from preplanning to word choice.
  • Grammar, Part II. Review common marks of punctuation.
  • Crafting Strong Paragraphs. Craft unified, developed, and coherent paragraphs.
  • Working with Sentences. Craft sentences with strong, clear, and consistent subjects and verbs; include transitions (that are properly punctuated); and use words that are vivid, descriptive, and engaging.
  • The Review Process. Distinguish and assign roles and responsibilities among the author and various reviewers. Establish an editorial process, including file management and comment control and addressing.
  • Grammar, Part III. Learn which reference works to use in which situations.
  • Using Microsoft Word Effectively. Go beyond the basics to understand the software you use most frequently.
